The Sabbatical
I include this section because this is pretty much what started my writing. Intended as an experimental two-hander in high school with my closest friend Eli Ham, it turned into a fleshed out adventure/dark comedy about a guy who decides never to leave his apartment ever again, much to the chagrin of his do-gooder friends.
Written for Eli, the main character, Mikey G, is a manipulative, sarcastic and overintelligent hermit who claims the throne of "the Hermit Prince of Pape". After some messing around, the play became a three hander with the addition of another character, which turned it into a love triangle of sorts.
In 2005, we hired a producer - a local DJ - to help fund the project. He was willing to put down a good amount of capital and we agreed we would fundraise and sell tickets to help pay it back. One morning, once we had our venue lined up (former hardcore punk loft venue on Lower Jarvis, Siesta Nouveau, killed dead and turned into zombie condos), he told us that he spent all the money and couldn't commit. Ah, the arts.
Without getting too bogged down in early 20s anger, we cobbled money and begged potential sponsors to help this already-leaving ship sail smoothly. Our other close friend, Dan Leberg, decided to direct it, and it featured me, Eli, and Sarah Joy Bennett as the third character. It was a pretty decent turnout despite having zero budget for advertisement. Jessica Richter and Svea Vikander were on crew.
I'm proud of everyone who sacrificed their time and energy for this project. Although I cringe at my post teenage edgy writing, I am proud to call this my first show.
Eli helped me pick it up again in 2012 for the Springworks Festival. Despite the patience of him and our cast who had Rick Jon Egan, Krystal Meadows, and Peter Pasyk, I had already lost control of the story. I had no idea what the fuck this play was about.
One day, I'd like to get back to the roots of why I wrote this play, and maybe resurrect it with a little more of my confident, signature voice.
